Pythagoras was the first to write down the mathematical ratios of sound harmonics, though a good deal of work had already been done on this question in Babylon and India, and scales were well known to all musicians. Pythagoras even foresaw modern string theory, when he suggested that all energy and matter was in fact various harmonic registers.
