Newton is known to everyone for his discovery of calculus and gravity. But secret papers bought and decoded by the economist John Maynard Keynes in the 1930s reveal that Newton's thoughts were by no means limited to what is called science today. Indeed, his greatest passion was for alchemy. Newton had to write up his work on alchemy in a secret code, as the Church regarded alchemy as being a form of Satanism.
However, alchemy is far from being the nonsense - or the magic - that it was once regarded as being. The basic idea of alchemy was correct - one atomic element can be transformed into another. However, it was not until the age of nuclear physics in the 20th century that this was shown to be true.
